...Russians have no special tricks for keeping warm. Every man wears a shapka, a fur (muskrat, rabbit, squirrel, fox or Persian lamb) hat with ear flaps. Everyone wears warm boots; the best are the felt valenki favored by villagers. People who work outdoors wear, of course. Soviet Union suits. After a long spell in the cold, they raise spirits with a stiff jolt of vodka and a hunk of fatback...

After carefully studying woolly bear caterpillars, the thickness of fur on squirrels' tails and other natural signs, "Abe Weatherwise" late last year predicted in The Old Farmers'Almanac that the current winter would be a cold one. Jerome Namias, a meteorologist at California's Scripps Institution of Oceanography, had made a similar forecast. But even Namias is surprised at the subfreezing temperatures that have prevailed over most of the eastern half of the U.S. Says he: "I was a little too conservative. ...outside the Brooks Atkinson Theater in New York with a small cat in her arms, offering to sell it to the highest bidder. But Dennis, 39, has a thing about cats, and lives with 33 of them (guests who drop in for a visit have been known to find fur in their drinks). So when the Humane Society of New York City decided to auction off some homeless kittens, guess who was asked to be auctioneer? Dennis did fairly well, too: she sold seven cats for $70 and, it goes without saying, picked out one to take home. "His name...
