...male acquaintance, finding himself in the midst of this newly chic debate, was confused, rather rightly, about why there was such a furor over SI. He asked, "whom does this issue hurt?" As a single, sans-nudity, sans-violence "tribute to swimwear," probably no one in particular. Elle Macpherson was not only willing and happy to pose; she probably made a mint. And as Mr. Zucker suggests, those who don't like it aren't forced to read...

Recently there has been much furor over the installation of grates over the hot air vents behind the Leverett House dining hall. Students and community members are outraged at the callousness that Harvard has shown the unfortunates who must resort to using our excess heat to survive. However, I believe that more people are upset about the cruelly symbolic aspect and unseemliness of the grates themselves, rather than the underlying problems of the security of students and the plight of the homeless...

All this furor results from some recent acts of irrational slaughter that claimed fewer than 50 civilians--a trivial toll in comparison with, for example, the Lebanese citizens killed during the Israeli occupation of that country, or for that matter with last year's butchery by U.S.-funded Nicaraguan "contras" and the U.S.-supported apartheid government of South Africa. In the recent airport attacks...

...French announcement and the resulting furor underscore the frenetic pace of AIDS research. At the NIH in Bethesda, Md., calls come in virtually every day from drug manufacturers claiming to have a new treatment for the disease. About half a dozen drugs are currently under serious study. Several, including ribavirin, suramin and one called compound S, have shown promise in blocking the replication of the AIDS virus. But few, if any, have demonstrated the potential to rebuild the devastated immune systems of AIDS patients...

...said. At week's end the government imposed restrictions on press coverage of strikes, riots and other social unrest. Even before the voting, the ever cautious Botha government was trying to deflect right-wing attacks. At a public meeting in Sasolburg, Foreign Minister Roelof ("Pik") Botha responded to the furor over the Van den Bergs, who now live in a mixed-race trailer camp, by saying that housing rules would have to be reviewed. That sort of equivocation did not impress voters on either side of the race question. Said Frederik van Zyl Slabbert, chairman of the antiapartheid Progressive Federal...
