...head off further furor or perhaps even cash in on it, Universal decided last week to move the opening up from Sept. 23 to Aug. 12. Says Tom Pollock, chairman of MCA's motion picture group: "The best thing that can be done for The Last Temptation of Christ at this time is to make it available to the American people and allow them to draw their own conclusions, based on fact not fallacy." ...unorthodox vision like Martin Scorsese's might have prompted heresy trials and burnings at the stake. Perhaps even a quick crusade mounted by ragtag armies. In the summer of 1988, the preferred methods of resistance are picket lines, economic boycotts and angry appearances on talk shows. In the barrio of Colonia Pancho Villa, a brawl broke out after the polls closed when P.R.I. officials physically ejected opposition representatives who were supposed to observe the ballot count. Elsewhere, there were charges that "galloping brigades" of up to 80 people...

...furlough furor threatens to overshadow these impressive achievements. Massachusetts is among 45 states that allow prison leaves. Last fall state legislators published a report lambasting the supervision of the program by the Dukakis administration. Authorities had not properly screened Horton before his leaves, investigators found, and they did not keep thorough records of his behavior in the prison...
