...ethnically Jewish nonbeliever, I find this fuss over conversion utterly baffling. Jewish leaders complain that conversion attempts imply that Judaism is an inferior religion. This seems unavoidably true. Any attempt to convert implies that the faith on offer is superior. "Theological arrogance" isn't a bad description...

Last week a new theme park opened in Orlando, Fla., called the Holy Land Experience. The founder, Marvin Rosenthal, says he is a "Hebrew Christian." This is apparently another oxymoronic have-your-bagel-and-eat-it-too sect, like Jews for Jesus. A fuss is bubbling over accusations that Rosenthal's park has a hidden agenda of converting Jews to Christianity. The critics' idea seems to be that Jews will be attracted by Old Testament aspects of the Holy Land Experience and then will get seduced by New Testament aspects. This seems to be Rosenthal's idea too, though...

...headlines when it became the final sticking point in the biggest merger in history, the deal that joined AOL and Time Warner (proud owner of this magazine) in corporate matrimony. The Federal Communications Commission wouldn't approve the union without special conditions regarding AOL's IM policy. Why the fuss? After all, some nonsophisticates argue, IM is just a kid's toy--e-mail for the Dawson's Creek crowd...

...deadpans, "I think you need to cry." She grimaces in mock frustration. Zhang tells the crew to let the blinds swing. "Action." The blinds sway and raise. Seconds slide by on the monitor ... 23, 24, 25 ... but Zhang doesn't call a halt. Finally, everyone understands what the fuss is all about. The scene on the monitor is vintage Zhang, slower than an embrace, more urgent than a call.
