Riley: It's a little bit easier if you're talking about an 8-week-old child to figure out what temperament is. There are two basic questions: Does she fuss a lot? And how does she sleep at night? ... You could do worse than starting with that if you're talking about a President or a presidential candidate. Does this person fuss a lot? ... Do the demands of the office wear on this person in a way that makes it difficult for him to think straight? Obviously, you don't want a Calvin Coolidge, who reportedly slept 11 hours...

Today, Toscanini's interpretations sound merely coarse, the vaunted NBC Symphony distinctly second-rate. What, one wonders, was all the fuss about? Beethoven: Symphonies Nos. 3 (''Eroica'') and 8. The outcome made one wonder what the UC was trying to accomplish by burning precious political capital in a bloody battle against a more or less...

...boring anyway. As city kids, we were used to these things—they actually made the night more exciting. So it seems strange—at least to one who put away her black cat costume about seven years ago—that there should be such a fuss this year over Halloween. Of course, the recent Tylenol poisonings cast a shade of gloom over just about any drugstore purchase. These days we reach for the aspirin with a sinking feeling that this might be the last one we take. But candy and capsules are different things. Caution...
