...morning of Feb. 19, 1979, a Cessna 172 took off from Santa Monica, Calif., bound for the ski resort Big Bear. On board were Norman Ollestad, his father, his father's girlfriend Sandra and the pilot. Crossing the San Gabriel Mountains in heavy gray snow clouds, the plane failed to clear Ontario Peak. It crashed into the mountain at 8,200 ft. (2,500 m), just short of the summit, in the middle of a blizzard. Norman and Sandra survived the initial impact, but only Norman made it down off the mountain...
...right through his hand, pulled it out and went back to chopping - but so far there has been relatively little actual post-Bourdainian fiction. Possibly the first novel of consequence is Monica Ali's In the Kitchen, set in a hotel restaurant in London. The restaurant's executive chef, Gabriel, has clawed his way up effortfully from the working classes, but having done so, he is now, at 42, having a midlife crisis. The actress's performance will be called daring, because of the sexual intensity in her trysts with Dafoe and a long, nude masturbation scene in the forest. But she's an acute judge of the woman's character in the subtler moments as well. Her face, which resembles...
...badgers Leonardo DiCaprio in The Beach. Later she played a studio executive opposite Nicolas Cage in Adaptation and tried to explain the plot of Vanilla Sky to Tom Cruise. Fantasy fans remember her as the icy White Witch of the Narnia films and as the soaring, fallen Angel Gabriel tempting Keanu Reeves in Constantine. Recently, and notably, Swinton has had on-screen affairs with Brad Pitt (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) and George Clooney (Burn After Reading). She was also Clooney's legal antagonist, an agribusiness executive, in Michael Clayton - a film that earned her an Academy Award...
