...golfers, opened Southern Appeal (www. southernappeal.com) an online store that sells such golf-related trinkets as golf-club stands and golf-bag-shaped Christmas stockings. Before they could open for business, they had to obtain a merchant account number for credit-card transactions from a local bank in Roswell, Ga., and buy specialized software to keep track of inventory on someone else's shelves. It was a lot of extra trouble, but in the end it paid off: the Pinks have more than doubled sales each year, and their sales are already up 150% for the first quarter...
That may not be well enough to handle Duval, a quiet man given the nickname "Rock" who rolls into Augusta, Ga., having recently won a minor major, The Players Championship, against a tougher field than he'll face at Augusta. That victory punctuated an altogether astonishing 18-month run of golf. Late in the season of Tigermania, Duval won his first-ever PGA tournament. He won the next week too, and then the next. One alleged target, NRB Industries, has reportedly settled its case against Milliken. The $2 billion-a-year titan has denied the charges, but Johnston, a $330 million-a-year textile...
...Chicago break-ins were part of a nationwide crime wave that has victimized more than 600 agencies, netting perhaps 500,000 tickets worth hundreds of millions of dollars. And the crimes are continuing. A Marietta, Ga., agency was recently hit twice for 6,000 tickets. "It's organized crime, and it's big," says former Miami Metro Dade detective Gary Yallelus, who along with his partner, John Little, first identified the ring. In 1996 and '97 they arrested 10 people in connection with the thefts, including several of the Colombians and Rafael Horacio Fernandez, 51, a resident alien from Argentina...
...Cantor, both 54, took a six-month respite from their busy lives in Los Angeles six years ago to search for a new place with a gentler pace where they could retire. They bought a boat in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and cruised up the Intracoastal Waterway, rejecting Jekyll Island, Ga., and some North Carolina towns and eventually settling on Chestertown...
