...such moments-when he throws all social and philosophical considerations to the winds and concentrates on building up the exquisitely precarious card house of a complex gag-Comedian Tati seems the funniest funnyman now at work in films. The trouble is that Tati is not content to be merely a comedian. He has developed all sorts of crypto-Chaplinesque rationalizations about the deeper significance of Monsieur Hulot-"modern man ... at the mercy of objects . . . enmeshed by circumstances." The film, as a result of these lucubrations, is at least half an hour too long, and in the length it fails...
...believe it they did. Among letters from hep engineers who realized that MOLE was a gag were many serious letters seeking information, asking for subcontracts, or jobs on Project MOLE. Eager enthusiasts called by phone. "They wouldn't let us explain what was going on," says Monahan helplessly. "They'd make sure they'd got the right company, -and then go into their sales pitch." One company insisted on being hired to build the launching pad (or sinking site). "One thing it proves," says Monahan, "is that engineers can be awfully gullible. One reason we did this...
...question of speech scarcely matters anyhow, for La Plume generally favors the international language of leers and leaps, pratfalls and double takes, cupboards and manholes. Last week the Ankara Court of Appeals upheld jail sentences for five more newsmen, including Managing Editor Nihat Subasi of the daily Ankara Ulus, official organ of the opposition Republican People's Party, and Managing Editor Tarik Halulu of the weekly newsmagazine Akis. Since the first press-gag law was passed in 1954, a score of newsmen have been imprisoned for crimes ranging from criticism of Menderes' financial policies to the suggestion that the Premier married for money. What is more, Menderes has suspended publication of Akis, has even dared to close down Ulus, the newspaper founded...
...Million (by Norman Barasch and Carroll Moore) is a type of play that, given time, Broadway might well make a million of itself. The formula is a contraption that keeps a farcical, topical, more or less sexy idea whirling, brings on a character every 46 seconds, drops out a gag every 19, makes a hideaway of the men's room and a rumpus room of the office. Aspiring to pandemonium, the authors never fail of noise; left creatively penniless at the second-act curtain, they spend the third act kiting checks...
