Prior to the Manhattan auction, a paper manufacturer named Louis Schulman borrowed $5,000 to put to his own $10,000 to buy the manuscript and present it to President Roosevelt. Henry Jacques Gaisman, board chairman of Gillette Safety Razor, was willing to go to $7,500 to present it "to the American people." Before he could finish his speech bids went to $24,000 and the manuscript was sold to the ubiquitous Dr. Abraham Simon Wolf Rosenbach who calmed patriots by announcing that for a "small profit" he was acting on behalf of the trustees of the Walters Gallery...
Died. King Camp Gillette, 77, safety razor man; of bladder trouble; in Los Angeles. Retired from active business in 1913, he returned in 1929 when intense competition set in, invented a new razor which his company immediately began producing. Probak Corp., a subsidiary of Henry Jaques Gaisman's AutoStrop Safety Razor Co., produced a blade which exactly fitted the new Gillette. Gerard Barnes Lambert, son of the founder of Lambert Pharmacal Co. and its onetime president (1923-28), was made president of Gillette Safety Razor Co., succeeding Henry Jaques Gaisman who becomes chairman.
