ACCORDINGLY, The Changeling doesn't look or sound like a Jacobean tragedy about love, murder and intrigue. The metallic scaffolding and leather jumpsuits that comprise Michael H. Yeargan's sets and costumes could have been borrowed from an episode of "Battlestar Galactica." Brustein's characters speak their lines at breakneck speed and with near-feverish emotion to give Middleton's rhyming text the language and feel of everyday speech. No stuffy parlor play this...
Neon has also been employed on Broadway (in Chicago, Sophisticated Ladies) to evoke bygone eras and in films to fulfill the future. In the age of laser beams and computer-generated graphics, Neon Artist Larry Albright simulated intergalactic weaponry and UFOs for Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek and Close Encounters of the Third Kind...
...first you don't succeed . . . From Battlestar Galactica to this season's V, science-fiction shows have stubbornly failed to take off in prime time. CBS apparently can deduce no earthly reason why, so it is trying with Otherworld. A family of five, touring the Great Pyramid of Egypt, is transported through a "space-time warp" to a mysterious world where the good people are androids, the bad people have ray guns, and no one is allowed to venture into the "forbidden zone." The family seems terribly blase about all this, but no more so than the series' creators: folks...
...some wonderful word play, and Finkelman's salutes to the television classics of the '60s and '70s cannot fail to touch those of us who grew up with Mission Impossible and Jeopardy. Nor is the rest of today's popular culture forgotten: Star Wars-types titles and the Battlestar Galactica theme begin this film and, within minutes, E.T. appears in a pay phone booth. Those not in the eighteen to thirty age bracket will miss these reverential spoofs, but the puns and wordplay should be universally accessible. Three officers, names Over, Under and Done, involve themselves in the obvious ranking...
When seen from the exit leading off Interstate 17, 73 miles north of Phoenix, it shimmers in the summer heat, a mirage-like vision that somewhat resembles parts of battlestar Galactica crash-landed in the desert. Arcosanti. The name alone suggests hallucination. It is derived from arcology (architecture concerned with ecology) and cosanti (Italian for "thing before"). An engineer showing off the unfinished structure's apses and arches proudly describes it as "the city of the future taking shape in the state of the past...
