Freighted Occasion. For everyone there-California's Governor Edmund G. Brown, Los Angeles' Mayor Samuel W. Yorty, Cardinal Mclntyre, the handsome women and active men sitting in the Founders Circle reserved for donors of $25,000 or more-this was much more than a gala evening. The Music Center is in the heart of Los Angeles, at the center of the cloverleafs that have long been mockingly called the center of the city; thus it is both highly accessible and highly visible, giving Los Angeles a new visual axis, with the building handsomely anchoring the new mall that...
This was the first opera I've ever been to in a Harvard dining hall, but it was a lot different from what it's like when you're just eating lunch there. For me, the costumed doorman, the gala black tie throng, and hot bitter demitasses during the interval were enough to make the evening. But producer Walter Jewell included an opera to boot, with lots of buffa schmaltz, all the trimmings: a bevy of beautiful girls, elegant costumes, and a glittering Mozart score with a light, frothy libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte...

A couple of hundred milling guests sipped lemonade or crowded around the guest of honor, Soviet Deputy Premier Anastas Mikoyan, flashing his toothy smile. Near by, a 28-girl choir in tight, bright sarongs of multicolored, hand-printed cotton reverently purred Djakarta's hit tune, Crush Malaysia...
...Keep It Gala. It took nearly six years of prodding by Stern before all three mustered the time and determination to get together; each has a highly prosperous career as a soloist, and abandoning private schedules is costly. Now that the three are committed to each other, they plan to spare a month or so each year for work as a trio, making plans far in advance, insisting on ideal halls for chamber music, hand-picking the piano. "We want to keep it gala," says Istomin...
