Samuel ("Black") Bellamy, beard down to his chest and black hair to his shoulders, looked every bit the pirate that he was. In the winter of 1716-17 near Cuba, Bellamy seized the Whydah, an English slave galley named for a West African port. He turned it into a carrier for tons of silver and gold but $ never lived to enjoy his hoard. The Whydah broke up in a storm off Cape Cod, its crew drunk on pirated wine, its cargo lost, its very existence doubted...
There was a time when a Navy man talked like a sailor. He cooked in the galley and ate on the mess deck. If he got out of line he was thrown into the brig. The galley became a kitchen; the mess deck was termed the enlisted dining facility; the brig was transformed into a correctional facility. Her passengers whooped with ungallant laughter. In Gaylesburg, Ill., to tour Secretary of Agriculture John Block's 3,000-acre farm, Mitterrand donned rubber boots, a farmer's cap and a sky-blue jacket with MR. PRESIDENT stitched over the heart. He and Block disagreed about American exports undercutting European Community farmers, but Mitterrand lightened the mood...
...most unpleasant stench. Seasick, any reasonable person might suppose; lovesick, the opera crowd prefers to believe, bringing the beast into their own frame of reference. Would that the basso profundo could hypnotize the creature with his low tones as easily as he does the chicken from the galley, on which he demonstrates his powers...
