...riots that bloom in the spring, tra la. And the first students to gallop out of the labs and libes for the annual monkey-see, monkey-do monkeyshines were the fair sons of John Harvard. Seems some sycamores along Cambridge's Memorial Drive were due for the ax (TIME, Feb. 14), and before anyone could bellow "Rinehart!" 2,000 undergraduate tree lovers rushed to the defense. "Two, four, six, eight, sycamores foliate," chanted the Cantabs fiercely. Then the crowd decided to block traffic instead. Hyman allows his meritocratic "British whiz kids" easy rein, but has unshakable ideas about how far they should gallop. Viyella International leaves research and development on new yarns to such giants as Imperial Chemical or Courtaulds and leaves garment making, when it can, to the tailors. Hyman concentrates on the richly profitable middle ground of spinning and weaving fabrics, particularly Viyella. Faster and faster they seem to run, until the shadows no longer keep up with what is casting them. One brushstroke more could throw it out of step, and Bacon knows it. He destroys more canvases than most artists paint...
Murder at the Gallop has other notable characters and one--Robert Morly as Hector--even proves worthy escort for Miss Marple. But Margaret Rutherford is a mountain of reassurance all by herself, and in an age of Cosa Nostra it is comforting to enter at least one world in which crime can never...
