It was away from the post with The Taming of the Shrew, a brisk Shakespearean gallop which showed Maurice Evans at the top of his form as the impetuous Petruchio. while Lilli Palmer gave smouldering life to the imperious Kate. Secrets was scaled down to a trim 23 minutes, highlighted by The Ballad of Mort, the Whale, Lobster Dante, Ballet of the Octopus and Sea Horse Gallop, a tap dance in 6/8 time, as well as Susan Freiberg's Minuet of the Shrimp. Last month, afraid that an all-round wage hike would whip Israel's cantering inflation into a gallop, the government reneged on a promise to raise professionals' pay. The professionals had taken all they could: 8,000 of them went on strike. ...music began with portentous thunder, answered by a piping call on the piccolo clarinet and a burbling of other woodwinds. Twice the movement plodded ponderously up harmonic mountains -and, triumphantly, gave glimpses of wide vistas on the other side. The second movement went along at a dashing, rustic gallop, while the third strutted with the bravado of a teen-ager unaware of being observed. Some of the loveliest music came when the high clarinet played a melting melody while the bass clarinet throbbed, followed by a slam-bang finale...
