When the knowing readers of Down Beat and Metronome voted on their favorite vocalists a fortnight ago, Crooner Billy Eckstine landed safely at the top of both lists (TIME, Dec. 25). Last week a coast-to-coast Gallup poll reported that the man in the street didn't agree with the jazz fans. Whittle believes Britons are fast coming to his way of thinking, citing answers to a recent Gallup poll question: "If you were free to do so, would you like to go and settle in another country?" Some 35% said yes, 60% said no, 5% "don't know."
