Americans distrust the cavalierism of modern-day health care and fear invasive medical intervention to the bitter end, or a lingering, undignified death while hooked up to life-prolonging technologies. A Gallup Poll conducted last April found that 75 percent of Americans believe that doctors should be allowed to end the lives of terminally ill patients by painless means if the patient requests it. Two appeals cases on this issue made it to the U.S. Supreme Court this summer; the Court ruled that there was not a constitutional right to receive physician aid-in-dying, thus effectively turning the issue...

...oppose government efforts to help minorities; the same percentage of blacks favor them. But the public's attitude varies depending on how the survey questions are crafted. While a poll put out by Connerly last week found overwhelming support for "federal legislation prohibiting government discrimination and preferential treatment," a Gallup survey released the same week found that only 37% of whites and 12% of blacks favor a "decrease in affirmative action." Those discontented with the first Simpson trial can rest assured that the damages awarded to the plaintiffs in the second trial, coupled with the expense of an appeal and the hounding by creditors, will cause Simpson to endure a fate far worse than any prison sentence. JOHN K. DAVIS Gallup, New Mexico...

When Americans were asked "Do you believe in God or a universal spirit?" in a 1994 poll by the Gallup Organization, 3% of those surveyed replied no. That response, whether one agrees with it or not, might be deemed something of an act of courage. During the cold war, the words communist and atheist became almost interchangeable; even today some feel comfortable writing the latter out of the civic contract. South Carolina, one of a handful of states whose constitutions require belief as a condition for holding public office (a dead letter in the others), is currently defending itself...
