Conventional wisdom in the thirtysomething era declares that the American marriage is in serious trouble: a sky-high divorce rate, new stresses and tensions in the sex wars and easy opportunities for extramarital adventures. Not so, according to a new survey conducted by Gallup for Psychology Today and two national TV programs, King World's Inside Edition and ABC's HOME. Although some experts question its accuracy, the poll indicates Americans are surprisingly and happily monogamous. In the survey, 90% of husbands and wives said they had never been unfaithful to their spouses, and most gave high approval ratings...
...drug-related accidents. In one of the worst, a 1987 collision of Conrail and Amtrak trains that killed 16, investigators determined that a Conrail engineer and conductor had been smoking marijuana just before the accident. So far, testing has support from an important group: the workers. In a Gallup poll released last month, a majority of adults said they favored random testing...
...Infiniti ads, applauded for their Zen approach, depict lushly photographed trees, boulders, lightning bolts and breaking waves. The level of public concern is so high, says Republican Senator John Chafee of Rhode Island, that pro-environmental bills now get "a tidal wave" of support in Congress. In elections to the European Parliament, Green parties scored impressive gains. In Hungary protests from local environmentalists led the government to cancel a $ controversial multibillion-dollar hydroelectric-dam project. And in the Soviet Union the budding Green movement showed its muscle...
...pain grows, the public is becoming furious with the pilots. In a Morgan Gallup poll taken last month, only 2% of the consumers surveyed said they support the strikers' wage demands. Bolstered by the customer outrage, airlines have stuck to their offer of a 6% raise, but only if the pilots agree to increase their average monthly flying schedule from 31 hours to 55. In an even tougher example of the airlines' stance, they flatly turned down an offer by the pilots to suspend the strike temporarily during the Christmas season. But if the strike carries on, spoiled holiday plans...
