...news from Laos was alternately good and bad (see THE WORLD). Although the domestic reaction had produced no new surge of street demonstrations, the first reports of public opinion were disturbing. George Gallup reported that public approval of Richard Nixon's presidency had fallen to 51%, the lowest point so far: only 19% agreed with Nixon that the Laos drive would shorten the war. Louis Harris discovered that 46% felt that U.S. troop withdrawals from Viet Nam were "too slow." No wonder, then, that when the President returned to Washington, he decided to hold a televised press conference...

Lindsay leads the field with the young, according to a recent Gallup poll, but that is hardly enough by itself to win him the presidency. He has gone about building a wider constituency as the spokesman for the nation's blighted cities first by organizing a coalition of the mayors of New York State's six largest cities, then by cultivating the public support of big-city mayors around...

Despite the tragedy at Chappaquiddick Island 19 months ago, despite the embarrassing loss of his job a month ago as Senate whip, Kennedy's potential Democratic opponents will fix him with an apprehensive eye all the way through the 1972 convention. Privately, McCarthy says he is undecided. He would like the Democratic nomination; he might accept a fourth-party slot. His backers point to continuing support among fund-raisers and students. A recent Gallup poll reports that, after Lind say, McCarthy holds second-place in the political hearts of college students. He outdistances. Muskic, Kennedy and McGovern. However, the poll registers all opinions. Among politically active students, McCarthy is doubtless regarded with less esteem. And while most students admire McCarthy, they would not support him with the old fervor...

...George McGovern stands for the Presidency in his own right. His ideology is farther to the left than that of McCarthy in 1968. His political style is more skillful and graceful than Clean Gene's. A recent Gallup poll showed that 75 per cent of the American people support the end-the-war amendment which bears McGovern's name. There is no reason why that feeling cannot be extended into support for a McGovern for President movement...
