...Democrats overplayed their hand in the House, meanwhile, when Rep. John Murtha of Pennsylvania threatened to withhold funds for any combat unit destined for Iraq which was undermanned or under-equipped in some way - an indirect Iraq no confidence vote. Republicans seized on this too-clever-by-half gambit, charging the majority with bleeding the troops and shrewdly challenging Democrats to simply cut off all funds if they didn't like the war. That worked. Murtha hasn't been heard from since, though his aides say he may say something in public this week about his next steps...

...incoming Senate Majority Leader, West Virginia Democrat Robert Byrd, argued that such a session would be an "overreaction." Byrd prefers that Congress wait until January, when the new Democratic majority in the Senate could have a greater say in the proceedings. Although Dole did not get his way, his gambit spurred lawmakers to form two select congressional committees to deal with the investigation. He and Byrd will appoint a 13-member panel of seven Democrats and six Republicans. Incoming Speaker Jim Wright and Republican Minority Leader Robert Michel will choose a 15-member House committee made up of nine Democrats...

Meanwhile, on the ground, the militants of both organizations began trading fire as never before...

...cause in the long run. The White House imagines it is girding for battle against the Democrats and the naysayers who opposed the war in the first place. In fact, its fastest-growing problem is with Republicans who carried Bush's water on "stay the course" last fall. That gambit cost the party 36 seats in the House and Senate in November. One can only imagine what that number would have been--45? 55?--had Bush campaigned last fall for sending 20,000 more troops to Iraq instead...

...Prime Minister after her term as President ends in 2010. One opposition senator, Panfilo Lacson, called last week's political maneuvering "nothing short of constitutional rape." The amendment also antagonized powerful business leaders and the country's formidable Catholic Bishops Conference, whose president, Angel Lagdameo, called the House's gambit "illegal and immoral...
