...rancid noir, with an archetypal plot: a loser on the run, hooking up with strangers who are very good at being bad. In Mexico, Alex (Kevin Anderson), a fugitive sailor, falls in with Missy (Rosanna Arquette) and Mills (John Lithgow), a married couple linked like felons on a chain gang. There is a slim mystery, with the federales in pursuit, but this is at heart a study of the cages three people have made of their lives. Mills says what they all feel: "I just can't get out of this goddam life...
...their traditional sense of independence will continue to wave off essential land-use planning and allow Denver, say, to become "the Los Angeles of tomorrow." Others point out that some of that nefarious future has arrived. Denver this summer has been gripped by anxiety over a sudden surge of gang violence. Martial artist Van Damme gets to punch out a rattlesnake and follow this moral code: I shoot you three times...

...know the players. Like their cousins elsewhere, Portland's racist skinheads sport flight jackets, suspenders and Doc Martens with shoelaces in various colors: white for racial purity, red for the blood they are willing to shed and yellow as a signal they have shed someone else's. But another gang of skinheads is slightly different in appearance: the swastikas have diagonal lines slashed through them, and black-and-white breast-pocket patches depict a crucified skinhead with the letters SHARP written over the top. These are the Skin Heads Against Racial Prejudice -- the remnant, less prominent in other cities...
