...over the South you can see them--convict and workers in gray fatigues, trousers with faded white stripes down the leg and always a rifle-toting guard lounging nearby. They chop grass, pick up garbage, and tar highways under the sun and the swirling dustclouds. Look inside the chain gang and you will find a caricature of middle class American society: duties and pleasures are meticulously ordered and scheduled, "Learn the rules" is the old con's advice. And it is good advice, for the road camp is a world of regulations, conformity, and menacing authority...

...difficulty with the play is that the characters are greedy without having Faust-like desires. A day or so at the biggest department store in Chicago and some time rubbing necks with Truman Capote's gang would delight them. They don't want to conquer the world; they want to join some clubs...

...overwork Luke until he grovels at their feet for mercy, the inmates turn their backs on him. Luke, played by Newman with his customary cocky resilience, has one more race up his sleeve, steals a truck when the guards casually turn their backs on him, and zooms off. Chain Gang showed Paul Man failing with success-he made good his escape, but turned to crime to stay alive. Paul Newman succeeds by failing. His end is tragic, but he again becomes a folk hero to the men he leaves behind...

There have been other movies about children. But what children! Our Gang exists somewhere west of the moon. You don't bump into Shirley Temples at the grocery store. Once, in Tiger Bay, before she freaked out as Polyanna, Hayley Mills played a child. But the movie, like Sundays and Cybele, focuses on a sexy little girl's relationship with a fugitive. Every other little girl isn't so lucky...
