...antisubmarine book, of finding defenses against a new submarine revolution that began when the nuclear-powered U.S.S. Nautilus first slid into the sea four years ago. That revolution reached its highest point only last fortnight, when the nuclear submarine Skate poked up in a North Pole ice gap within atom-armed Polaris range of the Soviet Union (TIME, Aug. 25). In its atomic-age revolution, the submarine is no longer a mere marauder against ocean-borne commerce; it is a potential offensive weapons carrier of the first strategic importance...

...Delhi, India's Finance Minister Morarji Desai warned Parliament of the widening gap in foreign exchange, said the government may have to ''mobilize" all the nation's gold-from women's jewelry to hoarded bullion. India needs some $300 million additional credit this year, $500 million next year, more than a billion dollars by 1961. ...Winter's Tale, which the Stratford Festival has chosen as its third item in this year's repertory, presents special problems. Unlike The Tempest, it violates the unities of time and place, with a gap of 16 years in the middle. Before the gap, the play is unrelieved tragedy; after the gap, it is mostly pastoral romance. For this reason the more superficial commentators have regarded Tale as two plays. It is one play, however; and this production, under the combined direction of John Houseman and Jack Landau, preserves its oneness successfully...
