...movie is also filled with the sort of magical realism that (in the tradition of "Like Water for Chocolate," "House of the Spirits" and ultimately Gabriel Garcia Marquez) has recently become a trademark of Latin American productions. But here it somehow manages to seem fresh as clouds boil around the head of an angry Celeste and magic potions glow with cosmic energy. Indeed, the fortune-telling visions of the astrologist and the odd herbal concoctions of the witch-doctor seem hardly stranger than the post-Freudian tactics of the head-shrinker...
...tape recorder, he demanded that the pilot divert the flight and told the passengers and crew: "If I put these two wires together, this bomb will blow up." The plane landed in Miami at about 3 p.m. ET Friday. Police rushed the plane and took Ibrahim into custody. Francisco Garcia, a Spanish government spokesman, reported that Ibrahim ended up on the flight a few days after he escaped from a refugee camp in Southern Lebanon. As for the motivation, FBI spokesman Paul Philip said Ibrahim "simply did not want to go to Havana. He wanted...
Another problem is a lack of big names out on the road. What with R.E.M., U2 and Pearl Jam sitting the summer out (all three are preparing new albums) and the Grateful Dead disbanded (in the wake of front man Jerry Garcia's death last August), there are no surefire-draw megabands touring this summer, no must-see, tell-your-grandkids musical events--with the possible exception of the affably popular supergroup Hootie & the Blowfish. Sure, the Sex Pistols and Kiss have reunited and are touring, but those are concerts you tell your grandfather about...
Turns out, Grateful Dead front man Jerry Garcia hasn't let his death last year hold him back. You can still hear him in the mellow sounds of the Furthur Festival, a touring concert extravaganza that will visit 31 cities this summer. Furthur--a reference to the destination posted on Ken Kesey's Merry Pranksters bus--features former Dead guitarist Bob Weir's countrified-blues group Ratdog as well as former Dead drummer Mickey Hart's percussive world-beat ensemble Mystery Box. (The lineup also includes Hot Tuna and Los Lobos.) Crowds at the shows range from teens...
...venue to slake this thirst. Many Deadheads are following some of the Dead's spiritual heirs, like the group Phish, the Dave Matthews Band or the H.O.R.D.E. tour. And there's new--or sorta new--Dead merchandise due soon and often: mandolinist David Grisman, who recorded several sessions with Garcia, plans to release a CD every August for the next few years featuring portions of those recordings. First up: a traditional folk album. In the late fall the BBC will air a special on the making of two of the Dead's best-loved albums, Anthem...
