...those Savage Garden guys sure know what to sing to make a girl swoon. If you've liked what you've heard from their first album ("Truly Madly Deeply"), then Daniel Jones and Darren Hayes' second is a must-buy, especially for any cheesy romantic. With its honest lyrics and catchy tunes, the latest release by the Australian duo is consistent with the quality of their first album (tell me "I Want You," with its chic-a-cherry-cola random lyrics didn't ingratiate itself into your head). If you've liked them, you'll love them again...
...best thing though is that Savage Garden still rocks. "The Animal Song" (previously released on the soundtrack for The Other Sister) is an amazingly entertaining song. Its colorful lyrics and jungle-like drumming makes you want to jump up and prance around like a little kid. The album opens with the title song, which is chock-full of fast beats, dance rhythms and excellent use of electric guitar. (Or, as Jones calls it, "'I Want You" on an adrenaline rush.") ...angels creep ever-closer to the Garden State and the subsequent unmaking of the universe, Bethany struggles to understand why God has chosen her, someone who has experienced nothing but misfortune in her life. Fortunately, she isn't alone in her quest. Joined by Rufus (Chris Rock), the 13th Apostle who was left out of the Bible because he was black, a muse named Serendipity (Salma Hayek), and who other than Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Smith himself) as prophets, Bethany gets plenty of attention. ...barrier of your typical illusions of parents/grandparents--sterile virgins who exist only in the context of...well, you. Breaking down these types of barriers is exactly what director Patricia Rozema attempts to do in her rather unorthodox adaptation of Jane Austen's Mansfield Park. Indeed, Rozema crashes through the "garden party" of archetypal Austen movies (think Emma Thompson and Kate Winslett running breathless over the moor in Sense and Sensibility) to present a more richly satirical piece full of innuendo, witticism, and blatant sexuality.
