President Garfield, in office from March 4, 1881, to July 2, 1881 when he was shot, never made a speech of any sort to the G. A. R. While campaigning in 1880, he made a "Boys in Blue Speech." an "Army of Cumberland Speech," "Reunion with His Old Regiment" and "Inauguration of Soldiers and Sailors Monument" (Painesville, Ohio). In none of these speeches is there any resemblance however remote to President Hoover's Detroit speech to the American Legion...

Astute Manhattan Attorneys Samuel Untermyer and Arthur Garfield Hays and astute Clarence Darrow of Chicago took up the case of a purported next-of-kin to the late Ella Virginia von Echtzel Wendel, the bulk of whose estate (esti mated $50,000,000 to $75,000,000) was left to charity (TIME, March 23 et seq.). ...after Miss England's mishap the Detroit race officials reconsidered their intention of cancelling the third heat. George Wood ran Miss America VIII slowly over three laps of the 30-mile course. But the name of Gar Wood's 13-year-old son, Garfield Arthur Wood Jr., in whose name Miss America VIII was entered, was not engraved on the tall, gold Harmsworth Cup.
