More than Bigotry. The vast majority of unionized Negroes belong to industrial unions, notably the auto workers, steel workers and garment workers, in which they mainly hold jobs of low pay and skill. The International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union has managed to negotiate big pay raises for cutters and pressers, who are mostly white, while settling for minuscule increases for many of its 150,000 nonwhite members. In construction, Negroes make up about 35% of the laborers' union. Black membership is also high in the so-called "mud trades"-bricklaying, plastering, hod carrying-that white workers increasingly...
...Skolnick, now 39, recalls: "I kept running into judges who seemed unfair, dishonest and politically motivated." He was so embittered that he set out to improve Illinois justice by investigating judges and reforming the system under which they are elected in the state. The son of an immigrant garment cutter from Russia, Skolnick dropped out of Roosevelt University, where he was an A student but required special transportation to the campus, which he could no longer afford. Later, he taught himself law at home and carved a full-time career as a sort of modern day Robin Hood...
...recovery site in the Pacific, a frogman dressed in an all-enveloping biological insulation garment (BIG) will open the command-module hatch, toss in three similar garments and quickly close it again. Inside the Apollo cabin, the astronauts will don and seal their BIGs before reopening the hatch and stepping into a pool of antiseptic at the bottom of an adjacent rubber raft. Almost immediately, the frogman will again close the hatch, spray antiseptic around its edges, and then give the astronauts themselves a thorough spraying...
Deciding to trade one risk for another, NASA, without fanfare, changed its recovery plan. While Apollo 11 is still in the ocean, the hatch will be opened. As the astronauts emerge and climb aboard an attached raft, each will slip into a "biological isolation garment" brought along by a frogman who will be similarly outfitted. The suit is equipped with a filter that should block any organisms that the astronauts exhale. After a helicopter ride to the carrier deck, they will enter the van and follow the original quarantine plans...
...Geoffrey Beene predicts that "by the year 2000, women will be wearing only pants." There is one thing that men can do to retaliate: stop wearing pants themselves. Paris Couturier Pierre Cardin expects them to do just that. Last month, when he showed his new menswear collection, the first garment displayed was a sleeveless jumper designed to be worn over high vinyl boots. In other words, a dress...
