...means. That's very much the case with a new paper about methane emissions, published Thursday in Science. Based on a series of expeditions to the margins of the Arctic Ocean by ship and helicopter, University of Alaska researcher Natalia Shakhova and her colleagues report that methane, a greenhouse gas that is 30 times more effective in trapping heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide, is bubbling up from the continental shelf and leaking into the atmosphere. The estimated total: 8 teragrams - that's 8 trillion grams - per year. (See pictures of the effects of global warming...

Exactly what this means for climate change, however, isn't at all certain. Eight teragrams of anything, let alone a heat-trapping greenhouse gas, sounds dangerous, but as Martin Heimann of the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry in Jena, Germany, points out, the newly discovered methane leak represents a small piece of the overall global total of methane emissions - about 500 teragrams annually - from wetlands, termites and agriculture (including belching cows, rotting manure and rice paddies...

Bachelet has taken to the airwaves to tell quake victims that there is no food or fuel shortage. But on Wednesday morning in Concepción, says Lewis, "there were thousands of stranded cars and trucks in the city because there is no gas." He adds, "Building up social trust is more important right now than physical rebuilding," perhaps because of the reign of terror under the 17-year military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. Chileans still have a wary relationship with security institutions - an instinct exacerbated by the post-quake inefficiencies of the government. "You can see it clearly...

...being used as bait by Sarkozy to secure France wider-ranging business deals with Russia. During Medvedev's Paris trip, for example, the Russian energy giant Gazprom signed a contract with Paris-based GDF Suez to give the French company a 9% stake in the Nord Stream natural-gas pipeline and up to 1.5 billion cubic meters of gas by 2015. Nord Stream had previously been exclusively a Russo-German affair - one of many deals that other European countries and companies had signed with Russia in recent years, leaving France out in the cold.
