...buildings and covered an area the size of the District of Columbia. U.S. officials also disclosed more specifics about Iraq's uranium-enrichment programs, the linchpin of Baghdad's efforts to develop an atom bomb. In addition to the three methods for separating uranium isotopes -- gas centrifuge, calutron and gaseous diffusion -- already identified by Washington, Iraq relied on a chemical technique and a jet-nozzle process used in South Africa. New intelligence information has also confirmed that Iraq's chemical stocks are actually 40% larger than Baghdad has admitted. Inspection efforts have been hampered because much of the stock...

According to the most conservative of atmospheric models, our gaseous waste products may lead to an average rise of global temperature by 1 to 4 degrees Celsius during the next 50 to 100 years. Other models are in place in the United States, Great Britain, and Japan, each of which is overseen by a group of scientists working daily to reduce this uncertainty...

There is no certainty that commercially valuable deposits of minerals exist. Surface rocks contain traces of iron, titanium, low-grade gold, tin, molybdenum, coal, copper and zinc. Gaseous hydrocarbons, sometimes associated with oil, have been found in bottom samples taken from the Ross Sea. But in most cases, says geologist Robert Rutford, president of the University of Texas at Dallas, who did research in Antarctica for more than 20 years, "minerals are less than 1% of the total rock sample analyzed." Moreover, the vicious Antarctic climate would make exploration dangerous and expensive...

...meantime, the U.S. should begin to take unilateral action. The centerpiece of such a policy should be a comprehensive drive to cut gaseous emissions by conserving energy. Whether or not global warming is an imminent threat, curbing energy use would produce a more breathable atmosphere and reduce American dependence on unreliable foreign sources of fossil fuels...
