The first candidate to arrive was black Washington Lawyer Patricia Roberts Harris, whom Carter is believed to be considering for Secretary of HEW or HUD. When she realized that the shivering people at the iron gate were reporters, she exclaimed: "Oh, if I'd known it was you, I wouldn't have stopped!" Then she rolled up her window and sped off. When Mondale departed, a Secret Service bodyguard thumbed his nose at the reporters...

Browne is less adventurous on "Sleep's Dark and Silent Gate." Rather than build metaphor upon metaphor as in the stronger songs on his third album, Late for the Sky, he relies upon one image--the dark and silent gate--throughout the song. The remainder of the lyrics are direct but dull: "The only thing that makes me cry, is the kindness in my baby's eye." In that year, says Lee, now an associate professor of journalism at Western Illinois University, the KCIA effectively took over the South Korean embassy. KCIA men began to hold daily "orientation" sessions in which diplomats, says Lee, were directed "to organize businessmen" in support of the Park government and to "seduce Congressmen" with...

...could not tolerate. From midnight of the 16th to the night of the 17th, the rumble of tanks was heard as they descended on the Polytechnic from their camps in the north of Athens. At three o'clock in the morning of the 17th, a tank smashed the main gate of the school and special mountain warfare units of the army stormed the building. The students, their hands on their heads, emerged to face thousands of police, who proceeded to indulge in a sadistic orgy of shootings and beatings. When all was over, around 100 were left dead...
