...Francisco's Whole Earth 'Lectronic Link (WELL) is perhaps the most famous of these new virtual communities. It is connected to the Net but protected by a "gate" that won't open without a password or a credit card. Stacy Horn, a former WELL user, built a similar system on the East Coast with this twist: she offered free accounts to women, hoping they would provide a "civilizing force" to counterbalance the Internet's testosterone-heavy demographics.
