...nation of Gilboa, led by King Silas Benjamin (Ian McShane) - based on the Bible's Saul - has been at war for generations, most recently with neighboring Gath. His son Jack (Sebastian Stan) is taken hostage at the front but is rescued by David Shepherd (Chris Egan), who destroys a supposedly invincible Gath tank - a "Goliath," natch - by slinging a grenade duct-taped to a wrench. David is called to court in the gleaming new capital, Shiloh, where the cunning Silas parades him as a hero and eyes him as a potential rival...
...version of Manhattan - is stunning. You're lulled by familiarity, then rattled by reminders - say, a scribe following on Silas' heels, scribbling hagiography on a tablet computer - that this is a very different place. Equally arresting are Send In the Clowns (Johns), a rueful gaze into the cracked mirror of the middle years, and The Miller's Son (Jamin-Bartlett), a gath-er-ye-rosebuds-while-ye-may paean to the flesh...
During the process, while Peter was visiting him in Tucson, Stormy MacDonald slashed his wrists, then shot himself. Mother, girlfriend, best man ? all suicides. Intimations of mortality began to cling to Peter. Nothing he said seemed edited by his brain. His sister had gath- ered a barefoot-in-St.-Tropez reputation as Director Roger Vadim's newest protegee. When Henry objected to Jane and Roger's live-in arrangements, Peter announced, "Father was living in Malibu and the only difference was that he'd send his chick home at night. His duplicity blew our minds...
