JUDITH NATHAN: I receive a phone call telling me to go to the police academy. I am very anxious, to say the least. As we're driving, there is one sight I will never forget. A group of people at a red light in midtown have gathered around a large boom box-type radio. It's a cross-section of New York--teenagers, business people, elderly women. And the radio is so loud. I can hear the mayor's voice. I hear him telling people to go north. And I also hear that his voice is extremely calm. It reminds...
...NYPD officer who after Sept. 11 found a new career singing Berlin's "solemn prayer" at ball games. DRod's tenor is just as supple and virile on this CD single, released Dec. 11. Guest emcee Rudy Giuliani reads the verse in impeccable New Yorkese ("While the storm clouds gather far across...
These days, Hamas doesn't need to recruit suicide bombers; there are almost too many volunteers. Men embittered by years of misery and humiliation gather at the feet of a new generation of Hamas preachers like the charismatic Sheik Hassan Yussef. From there the toys could be shipped across the ocean and distributed to needy Afghan kids. This gesture, in a spirit of hope for a lasting peaceful relationship, with no strings attached, would help the people of that devastated land know that somebody cares. BOB RICHARD San Diego...
...YEMEN: It's bin Laden's ancestral land and long a hideout for terrorists, who can gather comfortably in the mountainous hinterlands well beyond the government's control. Plenty of former mujahedin who came home from the anti-Soviet Afghan war took up the bandit life and now abet Islamic radicals, and al-Qaeda sympathizers are in the army and bureaucracy. Al-Qaeda operatives arrested for bombing the U.S.S. Cole in 2000 received false documents from a former mujahedin fighter working for the Yemeni government. The country, says a senior Western diplomat in the capital of Sana...
