...Gauguin talked taller than he stood. Actually, he was a little (5 ft. 4 in.) bantam of a man. But he walked Pont-Aven's streets with a nautical swagger, his great jut of a nose tilted in the air, looking like an evangelist pirate captain. He spouted maxims: "A line is colour, since it can only be born from the contour of spaces," or "The ugly can be beautiful, the pretty, never." To his wife, who was supporting the five children at her family's home in Copenhagen, he sent periodic sermons defining his new position...
Breaking Down Gauguin. With jigsaw-puzzle patience, he paints, stretches, and inserts separate canvases within larger paintings, such as his Dyce Head, which goes on view next week in Manhattan's Howard Wise Gallery. Slight variations in the insert's edges lend solidity and weight to the overall emblematic energy of his image. Ortman intends the circles, squares and triangles as external symbols; the results are bright shields of canvas, heraldry for a modern machine...
Though his constructions have had the brittle, balanced look of a Buck Rogers chessboard, recently Ortman has been going backward. Someone told me that art comes from art; I took it literally...

Two of the museum's nine floors are surrendered to an espresso and cocktail lounge and a 52-seat restaurant called the Gauguin Room. And since Hartford contends that a museum is "really like a church," there is a 3,500-pipe Aeolian-Skinner organ...
...some Saturday nights, Gauguin's Queen of the Areois swings away from the wall on a hinge, a concealed projector lights up, a screen drops from the ceiling, and the group watches a new movie. Also a photographer of considerable skill, Paley displays his albums to guests at home. In the kind of company he usually keeps, he is hardly picture-dropping, but a casual flip of the pages turns up some remarkable names and moments: Anthony Eden, thin as wire, stretched out in a bathing suit at Cap d'Antibes during a sojourn with the Paleys...
