There are several explanations for France's movie mania. The simplest is the deplorable state of French television, which is vastly inferior to that in neighboring countries. "People are fleeing their homes in search of entertainment," says Daniel Toscan du Plantier, president of Gaumont, the country's biggest film conglomerate.
