...chart the precise solar potential of neighborhoods, literally rooftop by rooftop. The company has just finished mapping all of San Francisco, allowing residents to enter their address and take the solar measure of their own home. "People in San Francisco think we don't have any solar potential,' says Gavin Newsom, the city's deep-green mayor. "But the map shows we have a lot more sun than you'd believe...

That news came around the same time the pro-amendment forces were running a devastating ad showing a self-satisfied San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom shouting wild-eyed at a rally that same-sex marriage was inevitable "whether you like it or not." The announcer then said darkly, "It's no longer about tolerance. Acceptance of gay marriage is now mandatory." Many fence sitters were turned off by Newsom's arrogance; blogger Andrew Sullivan attributed mid-October polls against the gay side to the "Newsom effect...

Proposition K, which would have prohibited police officers from enforcing prostitution laws and limited resources for anti-prostitution outreach programs, was defeated 58% to 42% in San Francisco. The initiative was hotly contested in the days leading up to the election, earning opposition from progressive Mayor Gavin Newsom and many others who worried that legalizing the world's oldest profession would make it easier for women to enter the sex trade, while also making it more dangerous by drawing a criminal element around prostitution. The country will know soon enough...

Martin and Lyon were the first married then, as well, but their marriage was invalidated along with 3,954 others when the state Supreme Court ruled that Newsom had overstepped his authority in ordering the licenses issued. Now, a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage comes up for a vote in November. Women are walking down the aisle together...
