Lazy as a cloud, the black-hulled, three-masted schooner Creole loafed along the coast of Spain last week. To gay music on the intercom, the 190-ft. Creole, world's biggest privately owned sailing vessel, stole past silver-sanded coves and pastel villages. On sunny afternoons, while the schooner lay at anchor, passengers dipped in the warm water or sipped in cafes ashore. This tale from Ovid was evidently a favorite with him, for he did three settings of it and even plagiarized from it for other works. Schmidt chose the second version with words by John Gay of Beggar's Opera fame. The charming soprano and tenor solos were beautifully handled by Sarah-Jane Smith and Antonio Giarraputo...
...other roles were less successful. Jacquelyn Zollo was disappointing as Teresa. She lacked the spontaneous, gay, zestful spirit that the young girl should bring into the convent to contrast with the cool resignation of the nuns. In her interpretation of the role, lines and actions that should have seemed perfectly natural appeared as blatant overacting. No one, for example, could envision her climbing a tree, as Teresa is supposed to have done. Miss Zollo's uninteresting performance unfortunately made the second act much less successful than the first--made it, in fact, quite dull in spots...
...production as a whole, however, is of a high professional quality. The play moves dramatically and well. This Theatre on the Green production does not provide a gay evening--the combination of sombre philosophy with grotesque revels does not make for frivolity--but is an incredibly exciting experience. Again, we must congratulate Group 20 for putting on this production...
