...truly Indian. "LeT, SIMI?it doesn't matter who was behind these attacks. They are all children of Musharraf," sneers Shah, referring to Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf, as he stands outside the morgue where he has just identified his friend's body. "Palestinians kidnap an Israeli soldier and Gaza gets bombed. Here we have hundreds dead. I am praying for a Prime Minister with backbone. What will India...
...this morning in the Hebrew-language newspaper Ma'ariv. That's significant praise, given the concerns within Israel that greeted the cabinet formed by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. Olmert is clearly the man on the spot in the current outbreak of hostilities with Hizballah and the ongoing operations in Gaza. But perhaps the most surprising aspect of the current crisis is that a one-time member of Peace Now, a champion of social welfare issues and a negotiated two-state solution, is the man sending fighter jets over Beirut. Defense Minister Amir Peretz, once known mainly for championing issues like...
...Early on, in fact, Peretz confirmed some of his critics' fears. He sparred with his boss and Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) generals when he pushed to reopen a long-closed commercial crossing point into Gaza and advocated talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Before the present crisis began, he and Olmert were heavily criticized for failing to stem rocket fire from Gaza into Israeli towns - including the hometown where Peretz returned every night to sleep. Dealing with Hamas won't be as easy. In Gaza, the main force that has tended to moderate the behavior of the militants has been public opinion, which has sometimes swung against the radicals when their actions prompted Israeli reprisals that punished the population. Now, though, Gazans place the blame for scores of deaths and deteriorating conditions squarely on Israel. Their anger and the prospect of an eventual prisoner exchange are strengthening the militants, which will make it harder for Palestinian Prime Minister Haniya to defend his agreement with Abbas if the current siege ends...
...been said that the Palestinians never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity--and certainly they have failed to secure their objective of nationhood. But Israel's strategic position too is less strong than it might seem. By holding on to the West Bank and Gaza after the Six-Day War in 1967, Israel sacrificed international goodwill. Political leadership in the Islamic world, meanwhile, has shifted to religious radicals, including the founders of Hamas and Hizballah. And new forms of warfare challenge Israeli capabilities. In 1948, 1967 and 1973, Israel defeated all comers in traditional battle...
