...mighty E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co., has written a monograph, understandable to laymen, on his hobby-hummingbirds. Greenewalt offers some intriguing hummingbird lore, including the fact that they are the only birds that can hover with body motionless, and the only ones that have a " 'reverse gear' which enables them to fly backwards as prettily and efficiently as they can forwards." What will most excite bird watchers as well as plain readers is the crisp, full-color photographs, the largest collection ever published, which catch the hummingbirds in dazzling flight...
...full view of Castro spotters on the hills surrounding Guantanamo last week, some 3,000 U.S. sailors and marines with full combat gear moved into position in an "exercise" simulating the defense of the base against overland attack. At the same time. Rear Admiral Allen Smith Jr., commander of the Caribbean Sea Frontier, announced that U.S. minefields, "plainly marked," have been planted just inside the fence around Guantanamo's 24-mile perimeter. But in happier moments (notably in press conferences and informal question-and-answer sessions), he impressed the experts with his detailed knowledge, eloquence and deft uptake. As the campaign surged into high gear, Kennedy left a jet stream of issues behind him (see box), along with the jagged seismograph of his public image. Getting into the swing of it, he proved that he can be as tough, skillful and attractive as any other candidate currently on the stump-and worthy of Dick Nixon...
...miles west of Albuquerque, a group of 19 small, coop-like structures covers a grassy, mile-wide plain. Inside each coop are four disks, each one meter across and wrapped in black plastic. From the disks, cables run to a central building crammed with oscilloscopes and other delicate gear. Last week the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, institutional proprietor of all this apparatus, announced that it has detected a cosmic ray (high-speed particle) that came to the earth from a foreign galaxy millions of light years away in the far depths of space. This was eye-opening scientific news...
