...business manager of a private school near San Francisco, has taken his wife and four children to the Sierras, five hours away, every winter for the past six years. As usual, the preparations began in October, when the Richardsons attended a "ski swap" and exchanged with others the gear that the children had outgrown. The Richardsons had been setting money aside every month since last spring for the vacation, cutting corners wherever they could. Wife Betsy made casseroles and froze them so the family could dine cheaply at its rented ski house. Says Bill Richardson of the trip...
Wilder made the film in capris, Sorrento and a studio in Rome, yet Aventi! has little more Italian flavor than Joe's Plaza. Wilder's infatuation with obtrusive angular shots emphasizes hotel musicians, airplane landing gear, the mortuary, and the like. He hopes on establish ambiance based on the incongruity of Italy the jet set vacation spot and the "real" Italy--a country he feebly represents with fetching shots of nuns, priests, hungry boys, and a breast-feeding woman. The incongruity is, in Avanti!, only a clumsy attempt to create an ironic background for ironic romance...
...short time later, Schmitt will probably be seen carrying off the familiar dumbbell-shaped package of scientific gear called ALSEP (for Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments Package). At a site some 300 ft. west of Challenger, Geologist Schmitt, with Cernan's help, will set up the five ALSEP experiments, giving space scientists their fifth automatic observatory on the moon (see Lunar Science, page 44). The ALSEP experiment that the scientists are particularly eager to monitor involves two probes that measure the flow of heat from the moon's interior. During Apollo 16, that $1,200,000 experiment was ruined...
...SOCIAL HISTORY OF THE BICYCLE by Robert A. Smith. 269 pages. American Heritage. $9.95. Unlike those other bicycle books published last year, this tells you nothing about how to fix a Dérailleur gear. It has more important things to report. For example, did you know that bicycle manufacturers invented assembly lines? That pressure from bicycle lobbies caused some of America's "scarcely jackassable" roads to be paved for the first time? In short, if anybody thinks bicycles are having a boom now, Robert Smith, professor of history at California State College, is prepared to prove that...
...time, it looked like nothing more serious than a bit of virulent '60s nostalgia. All the basic props were there at Louisiana's predominantly black Southern University: the band of students occupying the administration building, the crowd milling about on the lawn, the stolid cops in riot gear wielding nightsticks and absorbing epithets. Right on cue a miasma of tear gas blanketed the tableau, screams pierced the air and the players scattered. When the smoke cleared, however, the scene was not another Berkeley or Harvard, but was somewhat more reminiscent of Kent State or Jackson State. Lying dead...
