MYSTERY DANCE," a one-and-a-half minute gem, is straight-ahead rock and roll, the kind of fast, urgent and purely visceral rock where the cleverness of the lyric is no more than a pleasant but totally superfluous surprise. Costello proves here that his singing is equal to the trickiest tempo and the rawest lyrics; his guitar playing is a wonder, a crashing solo in the best '50s tradition. "I'm Not Angry" gives further evidence of his instrumental strength; here too the guitar work is excellent, searing and fluid in a more contemporary style. It's a truly...
...final work, Ralph Vaughan Williams's "Serenade to Music," the Bach Society was joined by the Harvard University Choir. Written to a Shakespeare text in 1938, the serenade fortunately has become a gem of the choral repertoire, a consummately felicitous welding of poetry and music. The Bach Society's performance was truly gorgeous--all moonlight and velvet shadow. The chorus blended into a cool wave of sound, plumbing the music's dreamy depths without sacrificing a sparkling diction. The soloists, particularly soprano Ellen Burkhardt, were uniformly fine. The orchestra matched them in ethereal luster as a glossy violin solo...
...editor who has already gone a romantic round one with this woman reporter, is a perfect complement; his witty rejoinders and aw-shucks mugging are irresistible, but you know he'd be unfaithful again in a minute. And not that this film needs anything more to make it a gem, but Howard Hawks' recreation and direction of a late thirties newspaper crew is perfection...
...lips as they exeunt omnes from Paine Hall each Tuesday and Thursday. Yes, it's 'Disco Music 1,' and, with Disco still riding the crest of popularity that made "A Fifth of Beethoven" a fave-rave among Music concentrators a few years back, this little oeuvre of a gem of a course may very well make it into the Confi Guide next year. That thumping bass, those strings-from-outa-nowhere--Garshk-only-knows ol' Schubert--if he had it to do all over again--woulda called it 'Schubert's Unfinished Disco Symphony...
...Asmara, the city that Benito Mussolini called "the gem of the Horn of Africa," the Ethiopian army is increasingly nervous. The vital 56-mile highway to the port of Massawa, as well as all other roads, is frequently cut, if not actually controlled, by Eritrean forces. The railroad from the port of Assab carries no traffic; its bridges have been destroyed by guerrillas. Ethiopian army units dare not travel unescorted more than a few miles outside the capital. When they do go farther, they move by convoy with tank protection and air cover. Their supplies arrive only...
