...West Germans celebrated Oktoberfest last week, the country fairly crackled with an excitement and ebullience that went far beyond the enjoyment of Gemüitlichkeit. On the streets, in restaurants, beer halls, offices and shops from West Berlin to Bavaria, West Germans could be heard engaged in a great, continuing national debate on the election that will be held Nov. 19. The vote, beyond ending a deadlock that has turned their Bundestag into a cockpit of frustration, will amount to nothing less than a referendum on the future of the Federal Republic. It will decide whether West Germany will continue...

...them know in there that we are with them, that they're not alone," explained one. The eerie wah-wah, wah-wah of police sirens echoed everywhere while army helicopters fluttered overhead. The mood inside Olympic Village changed under the stress from Gemütlichkeit to outrage. At one point, when a terrorist appeared on a balcony of the Israeli quarters, athletes badgered him from adjacent rooftops: "Take your guns and get out of here...

There was a touch of Teutonic pomp, but the circumstances were markedly different from those of 1936. The colors were cool, breezy pastels, not the strident Nazi red and black; it was Willy Brandt's gemütlich Munich, not Hitler's dark Berlin. With a fanfare of Alpine horns and a gaudy parade of 12,000 athletes from 124 nations, the XX Olympiad opened last week in an 80,000-capacity, acrylic, glass-covered stadium that stands on the site where Neville Chamberlain landed in 1938 to establish "peace in our time...

...production of a large variety of chess sets that range from the simple, functional and cheap to the bizarre and ultraexpensive. Perhaps the most costly of all is a $100,000 set of gold and silver, designed by Antique Dealer Arthur Corbell and displayed at a recent Los Angeles gem show. But what may well be the most appropriate design for an election year was conceived by LRH Enterprises of New York. Called "The Contemporary Game, Chess '72," it pits Republicans against Democrats, has elephants and donkeys as pawns and well-known politicians as the major pieces...

STRADDLING the historic trade routes of Southern Europe, drinking in the influence of other cultures, Munich has always been chiefly absorbed with the manufacture and enjoyment of Bavarian Gemütlichkeit (some of which is identified by its sudsy head). It's all very apparent today, this spirit of "leben und leben lassen"-a cheery apathy and beery tolerance combined with a benign condescension toward anything German that is not also old Bavarian. The ambience of the cities to the north-those pompous Prussians-can be described in straight lines and right angles. Munich gives you embroidered corners...
