...College is supposedly a community of people selected for their initiative and “leadership skills,” yet disturbingly few students are demonstrating the initiative required to question and defy gender roles. This is what makes the Women’s Center’s task so difficult, and why, thus far, almost all of its projects and plans are entirely beside the point. Creating a “safe space” for dialogue does not create dialogue: Most people don’t discuss gender because they aren’t convinced there...
...Center could potentially make a difference, were it to launch an energetic and pervasive campaign pointing out the hundreds of concessions women and men make to match gender expectations. It is not a victory to simply draw students with free tea and tours; showing that “feminists are friendly” might be nice but it is irrelevant to the problems most students face. Filmed primarily in soundstages and on location in Budapest, the film is also disappointingly confined to cramped rooms. Perhaps the director was trying to convey the lifestyle of hermit Beethoven; still, the film gives no impression of actually occurring...
...proposal will amend the Michigan constitution to “ban public institutions from using affirmative action programs that give preferential treatment to groups or individuals based on their race, gender, color, ethnicity or national origin for public employment, education or contracting purposes.” And the question’s definition of public institutions is all-encompassing, including “state government, local governments, public colleges and universities, community colleges and school districts.” The results of this amendment could be disastrous to the missions of Michigan’s state institutions...
