Skeptics charged that lottery proceeds would disappear into the morass of general government revenue. But once elected, Miller carefully earmarked the money for specific education programs, most notably the HOPE Scholarship, which pays state-college tuition for any Georgia high school graduate who maintains a B average. The scholarship, which has sent more than 330,000 students to college, has in a few short years attained sacred-cow status in the Peach State. The Democratic and Republican candidates to succeed Miller, each of whom once opposed a lottery, practically fell over one another to pledge HOPE's continuation. In Alabama...
Just about every large U.S. corporation has an FSC; Intel, Eastman Kodak, General Motors, Caterpillar, Union Carbide, Chrysler, R.J. Reynolds and Georgia-Pacific are just a few. And why not? A corporation with an FSC can shelter 15% or more of its export profits from federal income...
...election results, install Oklahoma?s Frank Keating as their new leader and discuss a possible coup. The target is Jim Nicholson, the GOP party chairman who many Republicans say shares the blame for making a hash of the recent elections and for being, looking and sounding too conservative in general. Several of the governors, including Michigan's John Engler, have said in public that it?s time for Nicholson to pack his bags. Lines like "stop or I'll shoot" and "I love her and you took her away" alternate with weirdly sophisticated monologues on security and trust. The plot aims to depict paranoid modernity but misses, venturing off into the surreal as it ticks through comedy, romance, tragedy and documentary. The aesthetic attempts to depict low-class L.A. kitsch (the 1954 sushi joint, Tommy's family home in the outer 'burbs), but lacks many key touches. Especially lacking is the cool, retro music soundtrack one would associate with such a picture...
...expectancy than a newborn because a 30-year-old can no longer die at an age younger than 30. He extends this argument to say that if life on Earth has survived as long as it has, it has a longer life expectancy than life in the universe in general. This is a reasonable statement, when applied to life in general. But Aczel is talking about intelligent life, and in particular, intelligent life that can communicate through space. On both of these counts, we are the cosmic equivalent of newborns, making Aczel's conclusion flawed...
