...inspired ghoulish stories that the Communists had proposed to the Nazis a partition of Poland. But while Comrade Stalin maintained an enigmatic silence the British were taking it for granted that the British-French-Russian alliance was in the bag. They even announced that Kliment Voroshilov, top-ranking Soviet General, friend of Stalin and Molotov and Commissar for Defense, had been invited to attend British Army maneuvers next fall...
Right Somersault. Few French Cabinets have survived such troublous periods as the last 14 months. Daladier's Cabinet survived by a steady process of swinging Right-a right swing so sharp that he virtually performed a political cartwheel. In general, the French Right favored appeasement. The British Cabinet, bent on handouts for the dictators, pressed Leftist Daladier to give way. He sealed tight the Spanish border, an action which also sealed the fate of the Spanish Loyalists. French finances groaned, the franc wavered, the country rapidly lost its gold. At Munich he gave way completely and brought France...
...swinging still further Right. Because of the international crisis, Parliament twice granted him temporary power to rule by decree. He appeased the Right by doing away with the 40-hour week-by stages both before and after Munich. There were many small strikes and one big attempt at a general strike, all defeated. Aggregate membership of this big bundle: about 4,500,000. The Assembly formally invited the Southern Church, split off by slavery in 1861, to rejoin it. It approved a concordat, drawn up last year by Presbyterian and Episcopal commissions, for cooperation between the two churches, beginning in local congregations (TIME, Feb. 6). As Moderator...
...John D. Rockefeller had little schooling, but no individual has influenced U. S. education more than he. Through his second largest philanthropy, the General Education Board, he angeled Progressive Education. Prime monument to his influence is Manhattan's Lincoln School, which for 22 years has done more than any other institution to shape U. S. public schools. Last week progressive educators were abuzz about: i) an attempt to put Lincoln School quietly out of the way, 2) an attempt by a Rockefeller grandson to prevent...
