Summing up in Science, Dr. Gregory noted that the idea of a comparatively recent divergence of man from the anthropoid stem is generally repugnant to "that self-conscious and conceited prig who calls himself Homo sapiens and is fond of acting like the viceroy of God." He points out that some scientists who ought to know better keep toying with the idea that, during the general evolution of the vertebrates, a sort of separate channel was set aside for the line which was eventually to flower...
...Social Register is rarely allowed to forget that the great-granduncle for whom he is named invented condensed milk. Not so well known is the fact that his great-grandfather John and two brothers started the first newspaper in the Republic of Texas, ran it until the Mexican General Santa Anna destroyed their press. Last week Gail Borden recalled this bit of family history when he was lifted out of his congenial niche as columnist and drama critic of Chicago's tabloid Daily Times and made managing editor to succeed Lou Ruppel, who resigned last month (TIME...
...last week British Broadcasting Corp. staged a unique and peculiarly British program, a broadcast strictly for dogs. This was the sort of thing decorous Director-General Sir John Reith might have forbidden in his time, but strait-laced Sir John was replaced last October by heartier Frederick Wolff Ogilvie. "Calling All Dogs" was announced as an experiment to find out just what broadcasting means to dogs. So British radio owners were asked to have their dogs listen in, and to report their dogs' reactions to the broadcast...
Last week the furniture makers were cheerful as buyers placed orders for Kentwood. Although home-building bucked the recession tide, the furniture industry did not. Furniture follows the general business cycle rather than the building cycle, and the automobile has long since displaced it as Public Want No. 2 (No. 1 is food & clothing). But even in 1938 manufacturers turned out nearly $400,000,000 worth of furniture, double their 1932 volume, and forecasters are cheerful about the industry's 1939 prospects. Grand Rapids is especially cheerful about Kentwood's prospects...
...Uptown at the Rehn Galleries was a show of large, firmly painted water colors by Charles Burchfield, in which that famous first of the "U. S. Scene" artists proved his widening scope. When Burchfield began to paint in upstate New York, he loved and satirized the blackening monuments of "General Grant Gothic" architecture in U. S. houses and streets. In his later work, satire is supplanted by more profound emotion. Most dramatic if not the finest example: December Twilight: a cold, desolate village against a furnace slit of sunset...
