...said that the Salesman-like his generic brothers, the Rainmaker and the Politician- is a particularly American phenomenon. To sell his goods, he must sell us belief in their validity. And since we in America have been ever striving to establish "a more perfect union," since our whole system of government pretends to be based on one great burst of philosophizing in the middle of 1787, and since we have no sense of our past history by which to assess our progress, the Salesman has been most successful when pandering to our dreams and illusions. But, now, he's trying...

...medical profession has had two years, from May, 1967, to May, 1969, to clean house: to take up generic prescribing and rid itself of unhealthy financial ties to the drug industry but has failed to act. On the contrary, medical spokesmen even here in Massachusetts which has a larger share of enlightened doctors than any other state, have gone before the legislature and argued against the progressive and highly desirable Serlin Bill which would require doctors to write at least the generic name for a drug product on every prescription...

...faith. It may turn out to be only senescent romanticism. But we cannot envision that future. For the moment we might breathe and touch the things of our poor, sweaty, nervous present and consider that even a living illusion can be more valuable than a dead reality. The generic challenge to dullness is not an irritation but a moral obligation, not heroism but perhaps a duty of every life of any quality. To claim that the avant-garde as well as the musical art is irrelevant is to suffer from precisely the coldness which they seek to temper...

...myriad imitators of television's Meet The Press were to be given a generic name, they might well be called Spivaks (after Lawrence, the host, of course). This year yet another species of the genus Spivak - the Novak, it might be labeled - was launched on 15 Metromedia TV and radio stations and eight public-TV channels. Titled The Evans-Novak Report, the program is run by a regular two-man press panel, Columnists Rowland Evans and Robert Novak. Unlike most of the other spin-offs from Meet The Press, it does offer at least one new wrinkle: during...

Other professors wheel and deal in more transparent ways. In 1967 a professor from Albert Einstein wrote to the Senate protesting Richard Burack's claim that generic name drugs are as good as the brand name variety. It turned out that this professor was a consultant to three drug companies and had been asked to write the letter by the president of the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers' Association. Professors testify in Washington against labeling cigarette packages with health warnings without revealing that they are consultants for tobacco companies. Others argue against government regulation of the drug industry sitting on boards of companies...
