...question Harvard's essential rootage in this nation. . . . While some of our unimaginative, vituperative detractors maintain that because we are 'capitalist' we are therefore inevitably 'imperialist,' I would assert from my recent experience that our sense of 'mission' springs rather from a feeling of responsibility and generous interest in world order; and toward this end, in the development of mutual trust and the encouragement of human liberty and well being. We are seriously devoted to the advance and development of emerging regions of the world--not hypocritically, nor exclusively for our good, but also, unmistakably -- cooperatively and charitably--for theirs...
...Passage to India is-not to put too fine a point on matters-superb. She has taken only the hard, tight plot of the book and fashioned of it a play crackling with enormous, concentrated tension, an exciting drama which yet retains much of the novelist's insight and generous wisdom...
Despite Willy Bogner's generous views, not all U.S. girls are pear-shaped, and many an Ample Annie has packed herself into stretch pants only to find that she is courting disaster at every turn. Now he is snapping out wisecracks. Now he is sitting alone, quietly unapproachable. He is too often bored. He is a bad listener in general conversation and a good one when...
Adoula is under pressure from the U.S. to be generous toward Tshombe, if he is willing to end the secession. The question remains how generous Adoula can afford to be without weakening his own position in the eyes of his supporters and his left-wing rivals. Any major concessions to Tshombe will produce charges from Communist-supported Gizenga that the central government has sold out to the colonial interests. Adoula's prestige has not been helped by the fact that, so far at least, the U.N. has operated against Katanga entirely without the help of the central government...
