...around Sunset Boulevard, ready for their close-up. It was a good-natured crowd. Just your average L.A. auditioners taking the morning sunshine by standing in a never-ending line wrapped around a studio. The ages seemed to range from late teens to early septuagenarians, with the majority being Gen X-ers in their late 20s and early 30s. Many were well prepared for the ordeal. ...hand-over of Hong Kong to mainland China is a relatively minor event among the emotional cataclysms in this short-story debut. Chiu refracts classic old-vs.-new-world tensions through the prism of second-generation Chinese-American Gen-Xers, inspired more by Kurt Cobain than by Buddha. Musical taste became our primary means of distinguishing ourselves from one another. In college most indie-rock kids respected hip-hop, and most hip-hop kids respected indie rock, but there was rarely any question...

...twice that for couples) tax free every two years. Instead of trading up to pricier homes, many boomers now warming empty nests can move into less expensive abodes without a tax penalty. That's one reason for the probable record sales of condominiums in 2000. Another: their Gen-X kids who have flown the coop are starting to buy places of their...
