...idea naturally has not gone down like mint juleps, especially since Inman-Ebel grew up in the North. In the current hate mail, a genteel adversary writes, "Dear Madam: I note that you are from Ohio. Have you never noticed the Midwestern twang? Like cats meowing...

...bizarre arrest of Republican Senator Bob Packwood of Oregon by the Senate's sergeant at arms and five Capitol police officers last week showed how emotional the presumably genteel senior body has grown over a furiously partisan election-year issue: a Democratic plan to reform campaign financing. Packwood's offense was to flee a quorum call. The raiders also came across Connecticut Republican Lowell Weicker, who was waiting out the call in his office. But, cowed by Weicker's bulk (6 ft. 6 in., 235 lbs.), they backed off when he stoutly insisted on remaining on his couch...

...plus years of spiraling growth have transformed the major law firms, leaving many of them more like the corporate world they serve: dollar conscious, competitive, increasingly bureaucratized and less genteel. With 300 attorneys, Cadwalader would have been counted as a giant ten years ago. Now it ranks as merely a large outfit in a field that holds megafirms of 800 plus. Did a majority of Americans in 1970 actually prefer Century City to San Francisco? Were people fetched by the shiny new discord of Houston suburbs more than by shabby, genteel New Orleans, by the glass and steel of downtown Minneapolis more than by the brick and stone of downtown St. Paul...

...describe the kind of people who are attracted to a place like Heritage U.S.A. I must strenuously object to such cavalier use of a term that is at least as offensive as other racial epithets with which we are all familiar. Of course, the people whom the more genteel of us call "redneck" happen to have white skin. They are not "people of color", Black, Hispanic or Asian-American, like myself. The term, however, applied to them is a derogatory reference to the laboring agricultural folk of the South whose white necks turn red under the hot southern sun. Sometimes...
