...mistake began when God was created in a male image. Of course, women would see Him that way, but men should have been gentlemen enough, remembering their mothers, to make God a Woman! But the God of Gods--the Boss--has always been a man. That makes life so perverted, and death so unnatural. We should have imagined life as created in the birth-pain of God the Mother. Then we could understand why we, Her children, have inherited pain, for we would know that our life's rhythm beats from Her great heart, torn with the agony of love...

...invading a male student's room and slashing his collection of 40 Playboy pinups. (A faculty-student board put the slashers on probation.) At Harvard, women are complaining to faculty members who persist in beginning lectures to mixed groups of Harvard and Radcliffe students with "Good morning, gentlemen." If it can really be said to be "about" anything, 200 Motels is about the effect it has on the audience, which is not always pleasant and is occasionally exasperating and even disconcerting. It helps that the movie is sometimes exceedingly funny...

...seeds of Independent Pinkney's defeat were sown at the same time Stokes was rejoicing at Carney's victory. Immediately after the primary, Stokes elatedly proclaimed that the way was now cleared for a race between "two gentlemen." And in words that would come back to haunt him, he added, "I am discounting the man who raised our real estate taxes, Mr. Perk." For despite every effort to switch black votes back to Pinkney, including two letters and another recorded message from the Mayor, the inroads that Carney had made in the black community could not be counteracted. Stokes badly...
